OCR (Optical Character Recognition) reads the image of each page and converts the letters back into real text. The visible page stays the same - we just add an invisible text layer underneath so the words become searchable and selectable.

No. The visible content is identical to the original. The recognised text is stored on a hidden layer beneath the page image, so the visual layout, fonts, and pictures are preserved exactly.

Then OCR is not needed - text-based PDFs are already searchable. The tool is designed for scans, photos of documents, and PDFs that were exported as images.

Searchable PDF keeps your document looking exactly as it does now - same layout, same images - but adds an invisible text layer so you can search, select, and copy. Text file (.txt) gives you just the recognised words as plain text, useful when you only need the content and not the layout.

Very high on clean, well-lit, high-resolution scans of printed text. Lower on handwriting, faded photocopies, or low-DPI camera photos. The clearer the scan, the better the result.

The OCR layer is searchable and copyable but the visible page is still the original image. To get a fully editable document, send the OCR'd PDF into our PDF to Word tool - that will turn it into an editable .docx.
