Frequently Asked Questions
How do I scan a document to PDF for free?
Open Scan PDF on your phone, point the camera at the page and take the photo. Crop it if needed, which also straightens it flat, and pick a filter if you want crisper text. Add more pages the same way, then download them as one PDF. It's free, adds no watermark and needs no account.
Is there a free online PDF scanner?
Yes. Scan PDF on iHatePDF runs in your browser on Android phones, iPhones, tablets and computers. Scanning and downloading the PDF are free, with no watermark, no signup and nothing to install.
How do I scan a document with my phone?
Open this page in your phone's browser and allow camera access. Photograph each page, rotate, reorder or remove pages if needed, and download the PDF. It's saved to your phone, ready to email, upload or share, and it works the same on Android and iPhone.
How do I scan a document on my iPhone?
Open this page in Safari or Chrome, allow camera access and photograph each page. When you're done, download the PDF. Safari saves it in the Files app, in the Downloads folder by default, where you can share it or attach it to an email.
How do I scan to PDF on my computer?
Open Scan PDF on your computer and scan the QR code with your phone. Your phone becomes a wireless scanner, and every page you send appears on your computer. Click Generate PDF, then download it. You can also use your computer's webcam, or click Add file to combine photos and PDFs into one PDF.
How do I scan a document and send it by email?
Scan the pages and download the PDF, then attach it to an email or message from your phone or computer. To send it to yourself, just email it to your own address. On a phone, you can also open the downloaded file and use the share button to send it through any app. If the PDF is too large to attach, make it smaller first. Open Compress PDF
Can I scan multiple pages into one PDF?
Yes. Capture one page after another and they are combined into a single PDF. Before you download, you can reorder, rotate or remove pages on your phone. When your phone sends pages to a computer, one session holds up to 60 pages.
How do I turn photos into a scanned PDF?
On a computer, click Add file and choose JPG, PNG or HEIC photos. Each one is placed on its own A4 page in a single PDF. On a phone, add photos from your gallery as pages. If you only need to convert images, without scanning, use JPG to PDF. Open JPG to PDF
How do I convert a PDF into a scanned PDF?
On a computer, add the PDF with Add file and generate a new PDF. Each page is turned into an image on an A4 page, so the text can no longer be selected, copied or edited, just like a scanned copy. No artificial paper texture, tilt or noise is added.
How do I convert a scanned PDF into a searchable PDF?
A scan stores each page as a picture, so its text can't be searched, selected or copied. Run the scanned PDF through OCR to add a hidden text layer: the pages look the same, but the text becomes searchable and copyable. Open OCR PDF
Can I convert a scanned document to Word?
Yes. After scanning on your phone, choose Download as Word to get an editable document; the text is recognized automatically. Scanned PDFs you already have can be converted for free with PDF to Word. Open PDF to Word
Can I scan ID cards and passports?
Yes. Cards mode captures the front and back of an ID card, driver's license or bank card and places both sides on one A4 page, ready to print or upload. For a passport page or any larger document, use the normal Scan mode.
Can I scan a book or a whiteboard?
Yes. In Book mode, photograph an open book and the two-page spread is split at the fold into separate pages. Whiteboard mode reduces glare and brightens the board so notes stay readable. Timestamp mode adds the date and time to each page.
Do I need to download a scanner app?
No. Scan PDF works in your phone's browser, so there's nothing to download from the App Store or Google Play and no account to create. If you scan often, you can add iHatePDF to your home screen and open it like an app.
Is the connection between my phone and computer secure?
Yes. Each QR code opens a private session with a random, unguessable ID, and pages travel over HTTPS. Only someone who scans that QR code can send pages to it, and you can create a fresh QR code at any time.
Are my scans kept private?
Yes. Pages travel over HTTPS and are never shared. Pages sent from your phone to your computer are deleted as soon as your PDF is created, or automatically about two hours after the last page arrives if you don't finish.
