Recommended Compression suits most documents: good quality and a clearly smaller file. Choose Extreme Compression when you need the smallest possible file, for example for a strict upload limit, and Less Compression when quality matters most, such as for print or archiving.

It depends on what is inside. Image-heavy and scanned PDFs often shrink by 60 to 90 percent, while text-only PDFs usually shrink by 10 to 30 percent. If a file is already optimised, you get the original back rather than a bigger copy.

Text stays sharp at every level. Images are re-encoded: the change is barely visible with Less Compression, slight with Recommended Compression, and noticeable but still readable with Extreme Compression.
