How to destroy a PDF

1
Upload your PDF or PDFs from your device, or pull them from Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive. Nothing is uploaded to a server - the whole tool runs inside your browser.
2
Pick a destruction method in the options panel: Shred turns pages into shredded paper strips, Blackout makes them solid black, and Blank leaves them completely empty. The page previews show exactly what the result will look like.
3
By default the whole document is destroyed. To destroy only some pages, click them in the workspace or type a page range like 3-7, 12 - the remaining pages are kept unchanged. Optionally stamp DESTROYED across destroyed pages or add a certificate of destruction page.
4
Click Destroy PDF. The output is rebuilt from scratch, so destroyed pages contain nothing from the original and can never be recovered. Download it, save it to the cloud, or send it into another tool.

Why use our Destroy PDF tool

Truly irreversible
The output file is built from scratch: destroyed pages carry no text, images, fonts, hidden layers or metadata from the original, so the content cannot be recovered by any means.
Three destruction methods
Shred replaces pages with a shredded-strip pattern, Blackout with solid black pages, and Blank with completely empty pages - pick whichever fits the occasion.
Destroy all or selected pages
One click destroys the whole document, or click pages (or type a range like 3-7, 12) to destroy only those and keep the rest untouched.
DESTROYED stamp
Optionally stamp DESTROYED diagonally across each destroyed page, so anyone opening the file knows at a glance that the content was removed on purpose.
Certificate of destruction
Optionally prepend a certificate page recording the document name, how many pages were destroyed, the method, and the date.
100% in your browser
Files never leave your device - destruction happens locally with no upload, so even we never see the document you are destroying.
Metadata wiped
Title, author, subject, and keywords are cleared in the output, so document properties leak nothing about the original.
Visual page preview
Thumbnails preview the destruction live - switch methods and the overlay updates, so you always see exactly what you will download.
Batch processing
With a free account, destroy up to 3 PDFs at once (80 MB each, 120 MB total). Each gets its own output file. Single-file destruction needs no signup, up to 80 MB.
Free, no watermark
No watermark, no signup needed for single jobs, no per-day cap. Your original file on your device is never modified.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove metadata from a PDF?

Add your PDF above, pick Metadata Scrubber and download the cleaned copy. It clears the title, author, subject, keywords, creator and producer, any custom fields, the XMP metadata, private application data and the document ID, and resets the dates. Our guide on removing PDF metadata explains why it matters.

How do I edit PDF metadata instead?

Pick Metadata Editor to set your own title, author, creator app, producer and creation date, then download the updated PDF.

Does scrubbing metadata hide the text on the pages?

No. Metadata is the hidden information about the file, not its visible content. To black out text or images, use Redact PDF; to remove whole pages, use Delete Pages.

How do I stop people copying text from my PDF?

Pick Lockdown: every page is turned into an image, so nobody can select, copy, search or extract the text. The pages look the same, but the file may get larger and is no longer searchable. See also our guide on preventing copying from a PDF.

Can I hide a secret message inside a PDF?

Yes. Ghostwriter hides a message in the file without changing how the pages look. Add a password to encrypt it, or leave it open for anyone who checks the file here. Use the same tool to reveal a hidden message later.

How do I shuffle the pages of a PDF?

Pick Scramble to put the pages in a random order. Your original file isn't touched; you download a scrambled copy.

What are Heavyweight, Chaos Text and Molasses for?

They're playful utilities. Heavyweight pads a PDF to a target size in MB, handy for testing upload limits. Chaos Text turns the text into a jittery, unreadable mess. Molasses makes a PDF slow to scroll and render.

Is anything uploaded to your server?

No. All eight utilities run entirely in your browser, so the PDF never leaves your device. Only a password-protected file you choose to unlock is sent to our server for that step.

Does it change my original file?

No. Each tool creates a new copy for you to download, and your original PDF stays as it was.

Can I process several PDFs at once?

With a free account you can work on up to 3 PDFs at once (80 MB in total), and the results download together in one ZIP.
