Editly: The Free PDF Editor Built for Real Work

Mar 9, 2026·9 min read

Most "PDF editors" online are not editors. They let you draw a yellow rectangle over a typo, add text in a floating box that hovers above the page, and sign your name with a wobbly cursor signature. Real editing, changing the actual words inside the document with the original font, moving paragraphs, replacing an image, redacting confidential text so it stays gone, is something they cannot do.

Adobe Acrobat does real editing but it costs $19.99 a month, needs an install, and wraps most of what you actually use in a UI built for power users. Editly is the alternative. Direct text editing with automatic font matching. Image insertion. True redaction. Multi-format input. Free, in the browser, no watermark on the file you download.

Quick answer
  1. Open Editly
  2. Upload your PDF, Word document, or image
  3. Click any text block to edit directly, or use the toolbar for images, highlights, redaction, signing, and more
  4. Use Undo and Redo to step through changes
  5. Download instantly as PDF, with no watermark

For Word or image output, chain the result into PDF to Word or PDF to JPG in the same session.

What "direct editing" actually means

Most online PDF editors are overlay tools. They place your new text in a floating box on top of the existing PDF page. The original text underneath stays in place. If someone deletes your floating box, the original returns. If they copy text out of the "edited" PDF, they get the original content, not your changes.

Editly works differently. When you click on text, the actual text block in the document becomes editable. Change a word, the word changes in the PDF data itself. Delete a paragraph, the paragraph is gone from the file. Copy-paste from the exported PDF, you get the new content, not the old. The font is auto-detected and matched so the edit looks like it was always there.

This is the difference between editing a Word document and writing notes in the margin.

How to edit a PDF in 5 steps

Step 1. Upload your file

Open Editly and drag in a PDF, Word document (.doc, .docx), or image (JPG, PNG). Cloud import works from Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive. Word files and images are automatically converted to PDF in seconds, so the editor opens with a clean editable canvas regardless of the source format.

Step 2. Click any text block to edit directly

Click on the text you want to change. The block becomes editable with the original font and colour preserved. Type to replace, edit, or insert text. The font is matched automatically. New text inherits the surrounding style so the page stays visually consistent.

Step 3. Use the toolbar for everything else

Insert images, highlight passages, draw with the pen tool, add shapes, sign the document, fill out form fields, redact sensitive content, change the page background, add page numbers, move text blocks around, delete pages, rotate pages, or clip text and images for reuse. Every feature is one click from the main toolbar.

Step 4. Step through changes with Undo and Redo

Every edit is reversible. Full Undo and Redo support means you can experiment freely and back out of mistakes without re-uploading the file. The session keeps the entire history of your changes.

Step 5. Download instantly

Export your finished file as a PDF with one click. No account required for the basic export. No watermark, no daily cap, no waiting. For Word or image output, chain straight into PDF to Word or PDF to JPG without re-uploading.

Every editing feature, explained

Add and edit text

Insert new text blocks anywhere on the page, or edit existing content directly with full font and colour control. The toolbar exposes font family, weight, size, and colour so each change matches the original visual style.

Add images

Insert images directly onto any page and resize or reposition them freely. Logos, signatures, photos, watermarks all drop in with drag positioning and corner-handle resizing.

Highlight and annotate

Highlight key passages with multiple colours, add comments for review, and annotate documents for collaboration. Useful for legal reviews, manuscript editing, and team feedback rounds.

Draw and sketch

Use the pen tool to draw freehand, add shapes (rectangles, circles, arrows), or sketch annotations. Pen size and colour are adjustable.

Sign PDFs

Type your signature, draw it with mouse or finger, or upload a signature image. Place it anywhere on any page with a single click. For full e-signature workflows with multi-party signing and audit trails, see the dedicated Sign PDF tool.

Fill forms

Click on any form field and type your response. No printing, scanning, or third-party form filler required.

Clip text and images

Clip any text block or image on the page to isolate, reposition, copy, or remove it with precision. Useful for reusing logos across documents, lifting paragraphs into a new layout, or stripping unwanted elements from a template.

Move and delete

Drag text blocks and images to reposition them anywhere on the page, or delete unwanted elements entirely. The underlying PDF structure is preserved so deletions are clean.

Redact content

Permanently black out sensitive information. Unlike fake redaction (drawing a black rectangle that can be peeled back), Editly redaction destroys the underlying text so it cannot be recovered. For dedicated batch redaction, see Redact PDF.

Crop pages and elements

Crop individual pages to a custom size, or trim specific text blocks and images. Useful for cleaning up scans with white borders or excess margin.

Change background and texture

Set a custom page background colour or apply a grid, dot, or line texture. Turn a blank PDF into a notebook page, or brand a document with a coloured background.

Add page numbers

Insert page numbers quickly with consistent formatting across the document. For more advanced numbering options, see the dedicated Page Numbers tool.

Multi-format input

Editly accepts four input formats:

The conversion happens in seconds and is transparent. You upload, the editor opens, and you start editing. Need Word back after editing? Send through PDF to Word. Need an image? PDF to JPG takes the exported PDF and returns a clean image file.

Common use cases

Privacy and security

Files are encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and deleted from our servers at the end of your session. The edited file is sent back to you, and nothing persists. GDPR-compliant. No file is opened, analysed, or used for AI training. For sensitive material (legal exhibits, tax filings, medical records), Editly is safe to use without additional steps.

Workflow chaining

After editing, send your file directly into Compress to shrink it for email, Sign for an audited e-signature flow, Protect to add a password, Merge to combine with other documents, or PDF to Word for editable Word output. No re-upload, single session.

Frequently asked questions

Is Editly really free?

Yes. All features are free with no watermark on output, no daily cap, and no signup required. Free accounts unlock higher upload limits but are not required for normal editing.

Can I edit text directly inside the PDF?

Yes. Click any text block to edit it directly. The font is auto-detected and matched. This is real editing, not overlay text floating on top of the page.

What file formats can I upload?

PDF, Word (.doc, .docx), JPG, and PNG. Word documents and images are automatically converted to PDF on upload so you can edit, annotate, and download them in one place.

Can I edit Word documents and images too?

Yes. Upload a Word file or an image and Editly converts it to PDF automatically, then opens it in the editor. All editing features work the same way regardless of the original source format.

What format does Editly export to?

PDF. After editing, download your file as a PDF with one click. If you need a Word or image output, chain into PDF to Word or PDF to JPG without re-uploading.

Is it like Adobe Acrobat?

Same core capabilities: direct text editing, image insertion, redaction, signing, annotation, page operations. Editly runs in the browser with no install, no subscription, and no learning curve. Adobe Acrobat is $19.99 per month with a desktop install.

Are fonts preserved when I edit text?

Yes. The editor auto-detects the existing font in the text block you click and matches it when you type. If the embedded font is not available, the closest match is substituted.

Can I edit a scanned PDF?

Yes, with one extra step. Scanned PDFs are images of text, not editable text layers. Run the file through OCR PDF first to create an editable text layer, then open in Editly.

Are my files private?

Yes. Files upload over HTTPS, process on our server, return to you, and delete automatically at the end of your session. Nothing is stored, shared, or used for AI training. GDPR-compliant by design.

Does Editly work on mobile?

Yes. It runs in any modern browser on iPhone, Android, tablet, or desktop. The editor toolbar adapts to small screens.
