How to unlock a PDF

1
Upload your protected PDF from your device, or pull it directly from Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive. Without an account: up to 80 MB per file. With a free account: up to 100 MB per file.
2
Enter the password that opens the file. If you only forgot an owner password (used for print or copy restrictions, not for opening), use the forgot-password option and confirm you own the file.
3
Click Unlock PDF. We verify the password and strip the encryption from the document.
4
The output is a normal PDF that opens straight away, with no password prompt and no editing restrictions.
5
Download your unlocked file, save it back to the cloud, or send it straight into another tool like Edit PDF or Merge.

Why use our Unlock PDF tool

Password removed cleanly
The encryption layer is stripped from the file, leaving a normal PDF you can open and edit anywhere.
Needs your current password
Enter the password you already use to open the file. We do not crack or guess - just remove what you authorise.
Restrictions lifted
Print, copy, and edit limits that were tied to the password are removed at the same time, so you get a fully usable PDF back.
Original quality preserved
Pages, text, images, and metadata are kept exactly as in the source. Only the lock is gone.
Opens anywhere
The unlocked file opens normally in Adobe Acrobat, browsers, mobile readers, and any standards-compliant PDF tool.
Cloud import
Pull files from Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive without a local download step.
Workflow Ready
Send the unlocked PDF straight into Edit PDF, Merge, or any other tool without re-uploading.
Private and secure
Files are processed over HTTPS and deleted from our servers shortly after the job finishes. Your password is never stored.
Free, no watermark
No watermark on the PDF, no signup needed, no per-day cap on jobs.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know the password?
Yes. You must know the password that currently opens the file. The tool removes that protection - it does not recover or crack unknown passwords.
What if I forgot the password?
It depends on which password you lost. If the file is locked with a user password (real encryption that blocks opening), we cannot unlock it without that password - we do not crack encryption. If the file is only locked with an owner password (restrictions like print or copy, but the file opens normally), we can usually remove the restrictions - use the forgot-password option and confirm you own the file.
Will the content or quality change?
No. Pages, text, images, fonts, and metadata are preserved exactly as in the source - only the encryption layer is removed.
My PDF had print or copy restrictions. Will those go too?
Yes. Restrictions are tied to the password, so once the encryption is removed the file becomes fully usable - print, copy, and edit work as normal.
Will the unlocked PDF open in any reader?
Yes. The output is a standard PDF that opens in Adobe Acrobat, Preview on Mac, mobile readers, and any browser, with no password prompt.
Is it legal to unlock a PDF?
If you own the file or have the right to access it and you have the password, yes. Do not unlock files that you do not have permission to open.
Can I import from Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive?
Yes. Use the cloud buttons on the upload screen to pull files in directly. No need to download them to your device first.
Is my password stored anywhere?
No. The password is used during processing to remove the encryption and is never saved on our side. We cannot view it after the job is done.
Are my files kept private?
Yes. Uploads happen over HTTPS, files are not shared, and they are deleted from our servers shortly after the job finishes.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The tool runs in any modern browser on phone, tablet, or desktop. There is no app to install.
